Chats
Chats are private conversations with the other members of your workspace: one-to-one or in a group. Use them for quick questions and back-and-forth that don't belong in a page or a comment.
Start a conversation
- In the sidebar, click Communication (on a phone, tap Messages in the bottom tab bar). It opens on the Chats tab.
- At the top of the chat list, click + (New conversation).
- Pick a member of the workspace. The conversation opens straight away.
You have a single conversation with each person in each workspace. If you pick someone you've already talked to, Tylode opens your existing conversation instead of starting a new one.
If the list says "There are no other members in the workspace.", you're on your own for now: invite someone first.
Group chats
A group is a chat with several people from the workspace at once, from 3 to 50 including you.
- Press + (New conversation) and then New group.
- Type the group's name.
- Check at least two people and press Create group.
In a group, every message shows who wrote it, and you can mention anyone in the group. A message of yours shows as Read once everyone has read it.
In the group's header, ⋯ → Members and settings lets you:
- rename the group (anyone in it can);
- see who's in it, and report or block someone;
- add people from the workspace (anyone in it can);
- remove someone, if you created the group;
- leave the group. You stop seeing its messages and, to come back, someone in the group has to add you. If the last person leaves, the group is deleted.
Find a conversation again
The chat list shows every conversation you have in the current workspace. Each row has:
- an avatar with the other person's initial,
- their name,
- the last message,
- when it was sent: the time if it was today, Yesterday, or the date.
Conversations with unread messages are shown in bold, with a counter of how many are unread. Click one to open it.
Chats belong to a workspace. When you switch workspaces, you see the conversations of the workspace you've switched to.
Unread chats in other workspaces
If you're in more than one workspace, Workspace appears at the top of the list with the current workspace's name. A dot next to it tells you that you have unread chats in another workspace. Click it to see all your workspaces, each with how many unread chats it has, and pick one to switch to it without leaving Chats.
The conversation header
At the top of each conversation you see the other person's profile photo (or their initial, if they have no photo) and their name. In a group, the group's name and how many people are in it. On the right is the ⋯ menu.
Write and send messages
Type in the Write a message… (@ to mention) box at the bottom of the conversation.
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enter | Sends the message |
| Shift+Enter | Starts a new line without sending |
You can also click Send.
Mention someone
- Type
@followed by the first letters of the person's name. - Pick them from the list that appears.
The person gets a "{name} mentioned you" notification in Activity. You can only mention people who are in the conversation. If you delete the mention before sending, nobody is notified.
The message menu
Each message has a menu with the reactions and everything you can do with it:
- On a phone, press and hold the message. Everything else dims, the reactions appear above the message and the options below it.
- On a computer, hover over the message and click the small arrow in its corner (Message options), or right-click it.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reply | Replies to that message (see Reply to a specific message). |
| Forward | Sends it to other chats (see Forward a message). |
| Copy | Copies its text. Only shown if the message has text. |
| Pin / Unpin | Pins it to the top of the chat, or removes it (see Pinned messages). |
| Delete | Deletes it for everyone. Only on your own messages (see Delete a message). |
The menu closes when you choose something, tap outside it or press Esc.
Reply to a specific message
- On a phone, swipe the message to the right until the arrow appears, then let go. On a computer, open the message menu and choose Reply.
- "Replying to {name}" appears above the box. Write your answer and send it. To change your mind, click Cancel reply.
Your reply shows a short quote of the original message, and its author gets a "{name} replied to your message" notification.
React to a message
Open the message menu and tap one of the six reactions at the top:
👍 ❤️ 😂 😮 😢 🎉
Reactions appear under the message with a counter. Yours are highlighted; click one of your reactions again to remove it.
Forward a message
- Open the message menu and choose Forward.
- Under Forward to…, tick one or more chats in this workspace.
- Click Send.
The message reaches each chat as a message from you marked Forwarded, without saying who wrote it or which chat it came from. If it had an image, the image goes with it. Mentions and the quote it was replying to don't travel. If you have no other chats in the workspace, you'll see "You don't have other chats in this workspace."
Pinned messages
Open a message's menu and choose Pin. The message gets a small pin next to the time, and the most recently pinned one appears at the top of the conversation, under Pinned message. Tap there to jump to it. To remove it, open its menu and choose Unpin.
Anyone in the chat can pin and unpin messages, and everyone sees what's pinned.
Delete a message
Open the menu on one of your messages, choose Delete and confirm. The message is deleted for everyone in the chat: its text, its image, its reactions and the notifications it left. In its place you'll see "This message was deleted", so replies don't lose the thread. You can only delete your own messages.
Send an image
- Click the attachment button (Attach image) next to the box and choose an image.
- A preview appears above the box. To drop it, click Remove attachment.
- Add some text if you like and send.
Chats accept images only. Each image can be up to 5 GB on every plan and counts toward storage (see limits).
See who's typing and whether your message was read
While the other person is writing, you'll see "{name} is typing…" above the box.
Your own messages show ticks next to the time:
| Ticks | Status |
|---|---|
| One tick | Sent |
| Two ticks | Delivered |
| Two colored ticks | Read |
Hover over the ticks to see the status in words.
Search your messages
- At the top of the chat list, click the magnifying glass (Search messages).
- Type in Search your messages….
- Results show the conversation and the matching message. Click one to open that conversation.
The search covers your conversations in the current workspace.
Unread messages
- Each conversation in the list shows how many messages you haven't read.
- The Chats tab shows your total unread count, and Communication in the sidebar adds it to your unread mail.
- Opening a conversation marks its messages as read.
Ordinary chat messages don't add to Activity; only mentions and replies do.
Who can chat
Everyone in the workspace can chat, including read-only members: that role can read, comment, chat and vote, but not create or edit content. See roles and access.
Frozen workspaces
In a frozen workspace you can still open and read your conversations, but you can't send messages until the workspace is active again.
Block or report someone
If someone bothers you, press ⋯ at the top right of the conversation and choose Report {name} or Block {name}. Blocking removes the conversation for both of you and they can't message you again. The full details are in Block and report.
What chats don't do
- There are no text channels. The Channels section of the sidebar holds voice channels only.
- Messages can't be edited once they're sent. You can delete your own, though.
For developers
You can list your conversations, read their messages and send messages through the REST API and the MCP server. See Communication API and MCP.
