Getting started
Key concepts
A few ideas explain how everything in Tylode fits together: who owns what, where things live and which plan applies. Read this once and the rest of the app will make sense.
Your account
Your account is you: your name, email, password, language, theme and security settings. You sign in once and reach every workspace you belong to with the same account.
Your account also carries your plan (Free, Pro or Premium) and anything personal, like your AI credits, your files in My drive and your Studio designs. See Your account.
Workspaces
A workspace is a shared space for a team, a class or a project. Everything in it (pages, databases, boards, whiteboards, the shared calendar, chats and voice channels) is visible to its members, subject to the permissions you set.
- When you sign up, Tylode creates a workspace for you, and you're its owner.
- You can create more workspaces and be invited to other people's. Switch between them from the workspace name at the top of the sidebar.
- How many workspaces you can be in depends on your plan: 1 on Free, 3 on Pro and unlimited on Premium.
See Workspaces.
Personal space vs workspace
Some things in Tylode belong only to you and others belong to the workspace you're in. They follow different access rules, so it helps to know which is which.
| Personal space (only yours, the same in every workspace) | Workspace (shared with the members of the current workspace) |
|---|---|
| My drive: your files and folders | Pages and the databases inside them |
| Studio: your presentations and designs (you can share each one) | Boards |
| Your personal calendar: a layer of the Calendar only you can see | Whiteboards |
| Friends | The workspace Calendar |
| Mail: internal mail between Tylode accounts | Chats and voice Channels |
| Plugins, Members, templates and trash |
In the sidebar, My drive, Studio, Notebooks and your extensions are in the Personal group. Your personal calendar doesn't have a place of its own: it's a layer of the workspace Calendar, in a different color, that only you can see. Mail and Chats sit together in Communication at the top of the sidebar, Friends is in the top bar and Members is in the workspace switcher. See Navigating Tylode.
When you switch workspace, the personal items stay the same and everything that belongs to the workspace changes. A presentation you make in Studio is yours: your teammates only see it if you share it with them.
Pages and subpages
Pages are documents made of blocks: paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, images, embeds and more. Type / on any line to insert a block.
- Any page can contain subpages, so you can build a tree as deep as you need. The tree appears under Pages in the sidebar.
- Several people can edit the same page at the same time, with live cursors.
- Pages have comments, version history, templates, sharing and a trash.
- Pages are unlimited on every plan.
See Writing in the editor and Organizing pages.
Databases
A database is a table with typed columns (text, number, select, date, person, formula and more) that lives inside a page. You add one with the Database block in the slash menu, from a template or by importing a CSV file.
Each database can be shown as a table, kanban, calendar, gallery, chart or timeline. See Databases.
Modules
Beyond pages, Tylode has dedicated tools, called modules. You open most of them from the sidebar:
- Boards: lists and cards, with a timeline view.
- Calendar: the shared workspace calendar and your personal one.
- Whiteboards: an infinite canvas.
- Studio: presentations, documents and designs.
- Chats, voice channels and Mail.
- My drive, the assistant and plugins.
Modules connect with each other: you can embed a board, the calendar, a whiteboard or a voice channel inside a page, and cards with due dates show up on your Home.
Members and roles
Everyone in a workspace is a member with a role:
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Everything. The workspace's plan comes from its owners, and there's always at least one. |
| Admin | Manage members, roles, settings and content. |
| Member | Create and edit content. |
| Read-only | Read, comment, chat and vote. Can't create or edit content. |
Admins can also create custom roles that add permissions on top of a base role, and teams to give access to a group of people at once. Individual pages, boards, whiteboards, presentations and databases can be restricted to specific people. See Members, roles and teams and Permissions and access.
How plans work
Plans belong to people
In Tylode you pay for yourself, not for a workspace. Your plan decides your personal allowances: how many workspaces you can be in, your AI credits, API access, integrations and Studio features.
The workspace plan
Each workspace gets the best plan among its owners, automatically. The workspace plan decides shared limits such as members, storage, file size, page history and voice calls. A Pro or Premium workspace can also include up to two members on the Free plan.
Your effective plan
For some features, Tylode uses the lower of your plan and the workspace's plan. This is your effective plan, and it applies to formula, relation and rollup columns, the brand kit, webhooks, the audit log and how many boards, whiteboards and databases you can create. For example, a Free account in a Pro workspace can use and edit what's already there, but can't create things that need Pro.
Frozen workspaces
If you're in more workspaces than your plan allows (for example, after moving to a lower plan), the extra ones become frozen ❄️: you can still read everything, but you can't edit, create, chat, upload or join voice channels. Upgrading, or going back to a frozen workspace and freezing another instead, fixes it. Nothing is ever deleted.
