Friends and presence
Friends are people you add by email so you can see at a glance whether they're online. Your friends list belongs to your account, so it's the same in every workspace.
What friends are for
Adding someone as a friend lets you both see each other's presence: Online, Away or Offline.
That's all a friendship does. It doesn't give anyone access to your workspaces or content, and you don't need to be friends to chat with someone in your workspace or send them internal mail.
Add a friend
- Click the Friends button in the top bar, then See all.
- Under Add a friend, type the person's exact email address and click Search.
- If the address belongs to a Tylode account, click Send request.
There's no search by name, on purpose: a list of users anyone could browse would also be a list anyone could copy. If there's no account with that address, you'll see "There's no account with that email."
Depending on your relationship with that person, you may see one of these messages instead of the button:
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "That's you." | You typed your own email. |
| "You're already friends." | Nothing to do. |
| "You already sent them a request; it's waiting for a reply." | Wait for them to accept. |
| "This person sent you a request. Accept it below." | Accept it in Requests. |
Accept, decline or cancel requests
Pending requests appear in the Requests section of the Friends page:
- Requests you've received say "wants to be your friend". Click Accept or Decline.
- Requests you've sent say "waiting for their reply". Click Cancel to withdraw one.
Remove a friend
In Your friends, click Remove next to the person. You both stop seeing each other's presence. You can send a new request later if you change your mind.
Block or report someone
Next to each friend and each request there's a ⋯ menu with Report {name} and Block {name}. Blocking ends the friendship and the person can't send you another request. More in Block and report.
The friends menu in the top bar
The friends icon in the top bar gives you a quick view without leaving what you're doing:
- The heading "Friends · {online} of {total}" tells you how many friends are online.
- Each friend appears with a colored dot for their presence.
- If you have requests waiting, a link like "2 requests waiting" takes you to them.
- See all opens the Friends page.
On a phone, Friends is in your account menu, in the Home header.
Presence states
| State | When friends see it |
|---|---|
| Online | You're using Tylode. |
| Away | You've stepped away from Tylode for a while. |
| Offline | You've closed Tylode. |
Choose how your friends see you
Go to Settings → Privacy and security → Privacy and pick one option:
| Option | What your friends see |
|---|---|
| Let the app decide | Online while you're using Tylode, away if you step away for a while, and offline when you close it. This is the usual setting. |
| Always away | Away, even while you're working. Handy so nobody expects an immediate reply. |
| Always invisible | Offline, exactly as if you'd closed the app. Nobody can tell the difference. |
The change is saved as soon as you pick it. Nobody but you can see which option you chose. See account settings.
Friends are global, not per workspace
Your friends list and your privacy choice go with your account:
- You see the same friends whichever workspace you're in.
- Friends don't need to share a workspace with you.
- Joining or switching workspaces doesn't change your friends.
